From the metrological viewpoint, the lowest common denominator in all logistics processes can be paraphrased as follows:
The making available of an exact target quantity of a product or product type at minimum cost (time + expense) and with maximum process reliability (no errors).
This may be a simplified definition, but when applied to the respective process/product it is irrelevant whether we are talking about the traditional supply of small parts such as screws or nuts, the packing of stationery items or even the picking of fresh products in a coldstore.
In all applications, the target quantity is assessed or supplied based on the unit weight of an item. The unit weight is usually determined using reference scales that are designed for measuring the optimised unit weight. Dedicated quantity scales, which can both be integrated in conveying systems and installed in picking stations, then work with the measured unit weight.
The integration of such systems in existing IT and ERP systems further simplifies this process. Once the reference weight has successfully been determined, the unit weights are written to the article master record, obviating the need for constant measurement and also permitting the allocation of batches, which yields enormous financial savings.
Combining metrological solutions such as these with audiovisual picking systems (e.g. pick by voice) gives almost 100% process reliability.
Connecting the scales via Ethernet or WiFi is a standard task for RHEWA and permits the use of previously unused resources.
Interfaces such as Bluetooth Class 1 also permit very easy mobile integration. In the area of control technology the Profibus DP interface is the most popular communications platform, despite the growth of Ethernet, and is fully served by all RHEWA indicators.
Design specifications are a central consideration when integrating scales in pallet and container conveying systems. To satisfy this key criterion, RHEWA has developed two different weigh frame systems that can be custom made according to the size and measurement requirements of the project. This is made possible by the use of standard modules that eliminate the need to "re-invent the wheel" each time. The advantages are obvious: bespoke solutions for the price of a volume product. Time- and thus cost-intensive conveyor installation work is reduced to a minimum, as all the relevant data is known before the order is processed and taken into account when the weigh frame is produced.
RHEWA designs the mechanical, electrical and software interfaces so as to ensure "plug and play" installation and startup.
In summary, in many logistics processes weighing instruments are a small yet essential cog in this powerful, albeit delicate machine. As a medium-sized enterprise with a high level of vertical integration, RHEWA is able to respond quickly and flexibly to customer requirements. Custom products based on our experience in volume production permit reliable, cost-effective solutions.
